BOSTON – Wes Welker and the New England Patriots have no plans to work out a contract before the free agency deadline on March 12, as reported by Adam Schefter.
It kind of sucks for this news to come out after all signs were pointing towards a contract agreement coming this weekend, but Patriot fans still shouldn’t be to worried. Welker is simply seeing what’s out there. Unless he gets a ridiculous deal that the Patriots can’t match from someone like Miami, Houston, or Denver, then there is really nothing to worry about.
All this means is we’ll probably have to wait a while longer for Welker to officially be back in New England.
Julian Edelman is still the #1 replacement for Wes Welker in my eyes. And depending on what Welker is asking, the 3-years $9 million that Edelman reportedly is fetching may be the best deal for the Pats.

I don’t think it would be a major hit to the Pats to lose Welker. Hernandez and Edelman take over the slot, Gronk and Ballard at the TEs, and we have that much more money to spend on a WR or DBs.
It sounds awful, but I’d rather see Welker walk and Talib back than vice-versa.
